Introducing the Cat to the Dogs

So, a few weeks ago, Youngest Grandson decided he wanted a kitten. His parents said no, absolutely they would not have a cat in the house.

Guess who got a kitten and guess where it lives. Yeah. Wayne and I now are the proud co-owners of a brand new kitty cat that belongs to Youngest Grandson.

I’ve always been a dog person myself and so has Wayne, but this little kitten has already stolen my heart and Wayne’s as well. Whenever our grandson stays overnight with us, the kitten sleeps with him, but the rest of the time the kitten sleeps curled up next to my shoulder.

Right now, both Shadow and Sheba are living outside in their fenced in yard and in their doghouses, so there’s not really a problem with the cat, but I’m wondering how to introduce the three of them. They hate cats. Do any of you have any suggestions on how to do this safely?

The kitten is so cute and playful, and I will admit that I’m having fun with it. I used to have cats when I was a kid and I’d forgotten how sweet and funny they could be. I’d also forgotten how, when they lick you on the hand, their tongues feel like sandpaper. It’s really weird.

As of yet, the kitten doesn’t have a name. Youngest Grandson said he might name him Rambo, but I’m thinking that Scratch would be a better name for it. My goodness, his little claws are sharp. They’re like tiny fishhooks that snag into your skin and hang on. Especially when he climbs up my leg to sit in my lap. Which is almost every time I sit down at the computer. I think this kitten really likes me.

I tried getting some photos of him, but he kept trying to eat the strap on my camera.

See what I mean? Who could not love this little kitty? And who can say no to Youngest Grandson? I can’t. I know, we’re spoiling him, but isn’t that what grandparents are for?

I am completely a cat person, and just today my wife and I were saying that we missed having one around. Seeing your kitten has just upped that feeling.

The only advice I’ve heard about introducing cats and dogs is to do it early and casually, with as little fuss as possible. But also to watch out for injuries — and I don’t mean to the cat.

Good luck. You’ve got a winner there.

I’m dreading the encounter between the species, but I know it will have to happen at some point. I think Shadow (the lab) will take to the kitty a lot better than Sheba will. She’s real high strung and ill tempered. And I think you should go ahead and get a kitty. I’ve been having a blast with this one. :)

    What a cutie!

I know how to solve your problem. Send him to me. You will have to tell your grandson that I stole the kitty.

I’d so do that Reffie, but unfortunately we’ve all bonded with the kitty and now he’s family. :) Maybe I can send you the neighbor’s cat. :)

My dog would use that kitten as a new squeaky toy. Not a cat person, so I have no ideas as to how to get the dogs to not eat the cat. Good luck and keep us posted!

Deb, I’m afraid that’s what will happen with Sheba. She hates everything except us. :)

Oh, how adorable! But, methinks he will be a handfull!

As for introducing the hounds to the kitty, let the dogs get used to the scent of him from your clothes or a toy, a few looks through a (strong) window to judge reactions and then decide if they should get nose to nose, but take your time! I don’t think anyone would want to hear about the demise of little kitty!

    Good luck!

Thanks 00dozo. I’ll try that. It may take a long time to get them to the point where they can share the same house, then again they may never share. sheesh! I may live to regret this. :)

I’ve never been without a dog so I guess I lean more towards being a dog person but I do love cats too and have had several. I’ve never had much of a problem introducing cats to the dogs. Every cat I’ve ever had has pretty much always held his own when it came to the dogs.
Don’t tell Duke I said this but that is the cutest little kitten. Had I seen it I don’t think I would have been able to pass it up.

I won’t tell Duke that you like the kitty. I couldn’t ever risk hurting his cute little feelings. If my dogs weren’t the size of small horses, I wouldn’t worry too much about them hurting the cat. Trouble is that they have been tortured by the neighbor’s cats for years now. So I’m expecting a fight. :)

That is an adorable kitty! We have a cat named Smokey. He’s an old tom with a torn ear and an attitude. Honey, our female german shepherd /pit bull mix is terrified of him. Harry (more beauty than brains) is fascinated by him. The cat hates them both with a passion so we pretty much have to monitor all the kids when they are together. I just keep everybody (canine that is) on a leash when they are together.

I guess that’s what I’ll have to do, Linda. At least until the kitten is a full grown cat and can defend itself. :)

The only with kittens, even really cute kittens, is that they grow up to be cats.

    I hate cats.

And how is that you, Knucklehead and me all blogged about dogs this week? That’s weird, isn’t it?

That’s wonderful, Marvin. You can have all kinds of pets on your farm. It’s sad when people are allergic to cats and dogs. My niece is allergic and she loves animals. :)
