Help yourself by helping others
I’ve often found that whenever I’m feeling down and out of sorts, the best thing to help me get back into a good mood is to do something nice for someone else. Sometimes it may be nothing more than smiling at a stranger I happen to pass on the street, holding a door open for someone, or allowing someone to get in line in front of me at a check-out or the bank or post office.
When we help others it automatically gives us a warm feeling that immediately chases away our bad mood. Research shows that when you surround yourself with positive energy, the kind you get from doing things for others, you feel less stress, more connected to your inner spirit and you become a happier individual.
It doesn’t have to be anything colossal — even the smallest acts of kindness can make a huge difference in our mental outlook.
The following suggestions should give some idea of what I mean by helping others.
- Offer to help someone carry their packages to their car. If they refuse, ignore them. Rip those packages out of their hands and carry them anyway. If they yell for the police, you can always run toward their car, providing you know which car belongs to them. Pry the trunk open and deposit the packages inside. Ignore their cursing and threats and walk away with your head high. You’ve helped and that’s all that matters. You should begin to feel better immediately.
- Help a child or an elderly person cross the street. It doesn’t matter if they want to cross or not. You’re helping them, darn it, so grab them by the arm and steer them through the oncoming traffic and deposit them safely on the sidewalk.
- If you spot someone walking along a country road or highway, stop and give them a lift. If they decline, force them into your car. Tell them you won’t take no for an answer. They might try to tell you that they are just out for an evening stroll, but don’t believe it. Some people are uncomfortable accepting help and them might make up excuses.
- Whenever you’re in a resturant, offer to buy someone a meal. Perhaps you could order them a huge steak dinner. They may try to tell you that they are vegetarian, but don’t fall for it. They’re probably just reluctant to accept your hospitality. Force them to eat the steak. You’ll get that warm fuzzy feeling knowing that you did a good deed.
Now that you have an idea of how it’s done, you too can be well on your way to having a more positive and balanced lifestyle. You’ll find that you’re more in touch with your inner spirit, less stressed, and a happier individual.
You’re welcome.
This week at Theme Thursday the theme is “Help”. Hop on over and read how the others handled the theme.

I’m definitely gonna have to try #4. First three are too likely to get the police involved. Hah!
Yes, the first three do have their drawbacks.

Yeah. What’s wrong with those people anyway.
Damn straight, Leeuna. If I’m going to do something uncharacteristic like help someone out, then they’d better bloody well let me help them out. I don’t have all day to spend on such trifles.
Hmm. Trifle.

That’s the spirit Frank. Don’t let them ruin your day by refusing your help. If I hold a door open for someone, they’d best go through it.
Truer words were never spoken.

Good advice Arlan. Thanks for the tip.
Looking at it that way, I’ve thought of many ways to help people like: move everything to the bottom shelf in the grocery store… tear off the high prices at the drug store and put on some low sticky ones… take over your blog and write serious stuff and bring people back down to reality … I’m kidding there. I may even let my hair grow to save my brother the trouble of cutting it at his barber shop. I may even vote Democrat to save my friends the pain of going to Washington. You’ve done it now.

Hey Milton, good idea with the price tag thing. Let me know when you plan to go to the drugstore again and I’ll follow along behind you and do my shopping.
Finally, a “Save the Children, Save the World” campaign that I fully support.

Hey I hope you have a good weekend. I put a link to your site on my blog list. So when someone visits my site the can click on your and visit you.
Thanks jb. I appreciate that.
I can think of a few people I’d like to drag across the street, pry packages out of their hands and throw them in a car. I think this is a good way to spend the weekend and I will feel refreshed for the new work week, perhaps with a few less people bothering me so I can get my work done. Thanks Leeuna!

I once “helped” a bum on the street who wanted spare change for “something to eat.” Instead I gave him a piece of chicken(logical, right?), but he didn’t seem to appreciate it. Go figure.
Bums can be so picky sometimes.
Whenever I want to feel better about myself, I catch a pteryducktyl and pull it’s wings off. My pet rock, Seymour, sleeps better at night on accounta cuz
Otherwise, I’m kind to old ladies, kids and dogs. Cats are uppity

Skunkfeathers´s last blog ..You Aint THAT Secret – Finale almost
Yeah, I hate it when those pterodactyls fly over and poop on my car windshield. You’re doing a good thing pulling off their wings.
That’s great advice! Sometimes I like to hold the door for a woman pushing a stroller. Other times I really enjoy not helping. It’s a win-win situation for me!
